Pioneer Magazine August (1959)

Just a quick post today. In fact it is just the front and back cover of a Russian/Estonian children's Magazine called Pioneer (August 1959). It has a variety of fiction and non-fiction articles for 8-12 year olds. The only reason it is here today is that it has a great cover. This is my new screen saver so I hope you enjoy it too.

Titmouse October (1962)

This is the October 1962 issue of a Soviet children's magazine called Titmouse (ZILITE). It focuses on stories about the August 1962 flight of the first dual crewed spaceflight, Vostok 3 and Vostok 4. It also has some delightful art done by children at the time about spaceflight.

Danny Dunn and the Anti-gravity Paint (1956)

Very sorry for the large gap in posts. It has been the biggest gap I have had for years, missing 4 weeks of posts. So on with the children's books!

Danny Dunn and the Anti-gravity Paint was a 1956 fictional book. Part of a 15 book series about Danny Dunn written by by Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin.  In 1967 they reprinted "...and the Anti-Gravity Paint." It had a new painted cover making it seem modern to young space-age children. Danny Dunn books were loosely science-based so the problems were solved with scientific ideas. I thought the 1956 space race setting of the book connects it with others of the time like Rocket Ship Galileo.

The Pioneer of the Pioneers (1962)

This books celebrates the voyage of Yuri Gagarin and how he inspired the Soviet nation. It has impressions of the flight, history of Gagarin, b&w photographs, and a large number of children's drawings of space flight. I have chosen to highlight these drawings as capturing the excitement children may have felt at the idea of people going into space.

On Space Flights (1956)

On Space Flight is a softcover Russian scientific book. It was published by The Young Guard publishing house and was intended for older children interested in rockets and space. The author was a Soviet astronomer who was known for his studies of gas dynamics. The book is mostly text but does have several nice illustrations.

New Year's Night of Sputniks (1967)

A strange and yet seasonal children's book for New Year's Eve. This is a long Estonian poem with illustrations by Olev Soans. His style of art is a strange technical collage. The images are beautifully drawn but also slightly disturbing (not unlike the past year). Happy New Year and the rise of hope.

Colored Legend About Space (1979)

Merry Christmas. As my Xmas posting I would like to share the joys of drawings by children about space. I hope you are having a chance to recharge and do something fun.

Out of scope for my blog with its 1979 Estonian publication date.  It seems to be illustrated entirely by paintings of space flight done by young children. I had came across an actual book of drawings done in 1972 by American schoolchildren which this current book reminds me a lot of. I blogged about that book in 2017.

The book is almost too big to scan since every 2 page spread is a work of art.  Enjoy!
