Respond Martians (1968) (part 2)

To continue with illustrations from Respond Martians (1968) a wonderful soviet space book. The second half of the book is about the planned manned exploration of Mars.

Illustrations of early Mars probes, both planned and conceptual. Part of the preparation for manned exploration.

So her is their vision of what manned exploration might be like:

The possibility that the Martian civilization is still under the ground hidden from sight.

The books ends with some nice endplates of the constellations that I wanted to share with you.  Hoped you liked "Respond Martians."

Respond Martians (1968) (part 1)

Respond Martians (1968) is another soviet space book I have recently found. It is concerned with the planet Mars and its exploration. It has a number of interesting illustration so I will break this posting into two parts.

Respond Martians. USSR. 163 x 215 mm (6.4" x 8.5")144 p. 1968.

I will mostly let the illustrations speak for themselves. The 1st half of the book covers history and historic stories about the exploration of Mars and interactions with its inhabitants.

As people dreamed of the canals on Mars and what its inhabitants might be like if they built a great canal system.

A very nice section about HG Wells' War of the Worlds.

Tune in again when I continue with the planned manned exploration of Mars!

Boys' Book of Science and Invention (1957)

Boy's Book of Science and Invention (1957) is a boy's encyclopedia showing "how things work".with a variety of non-fiction articles about various subject including space flight.

Wallace, Carlton.  The Boys' Book of Science and Invention (3rd ed.) London : Evans Brothers Ltd. (192 p.) 26 cm. Cloth, DJ. 1957

First published in 1949, and revised in 1953 this 1957 edition covers space flight topics in a series of 2 to 12 page articles.  Topics (with drawings) of interest include: "Inside a rocket ship", "Building a space  station", "The first Moon colony", and "Examining the Moon by rocket camera".  Especially nice is the single color plate of a painting of a manned landing on the Moon. Also 1961 edition.

The factual articles are pleasantly visionary of what the future in space might look like. Even with only B&W drawings to illustrate it.

I am still a sucker for Moon Bases and this book does not disappoint.

It also has a couple of interesting photographs.

Here is a nice space quiz...
 DON'T PEEK AT THE ANSWERS!
Finally here is a rare picture and one I had never seen before, the 1936 founders of the British Interplanetary Society. This is a precious picture from the early space age.
